Method
Bottle cocktail (base)
Combine spirits and mixers
In a large clean mixing bowl or measuring pitcher, pour 2 cups dry gin, 1 cup vodka and 1/2 cup dry vermouth. Add 1/4 cup simple syrup and 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice. Stir gently with a long spoon until liquids are fully combined.
Add bitters
Add 8 dashes (about 8 tsp) of Angostura bitters to the combined spirits and mixers. Stir for 20–30 seconds to incorporate the bitters evenly throughout the mixture.
Chill & adjust
Taste the mixture over a few cubes of ice. If it tastes too strong or too spirit-forward, add up to 1–2 tablespoons (0.5–1 tbs) more simple syrup. If it needs more brightness, add an additional 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. Stir after adjustments and taste again.
Fill a large bowl or shaker with ice and place the pitcher inside to chill for 10 minutes, or stir the mixture with ice in a mixing glass for 30 seconds to bring temperature down without over-diluting.
Bottling & finishing
Place a funnel into the sterilized bottle neck. Carefully pour the chilled cocktail mixture into the bottle, leaving about 1 inch (2–3 cm) of headspace. Cap tightly.
Label the bottle with contents and date. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Shake gently before serving.
To serve: Pour 2–3 oz (60–90 ml) over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Express an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a quick squeeze to release oils, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.
