Hot Dogs & Buns
Toppings (basic — kids style)
Optional serving sides (for Kids Meals)
Method
Hot Dogs & Buns
- 1
Bring to temperature
If hot dogs are refrigerated, take them from the fridge and let sit at room temperature for 5 minutes while preparing other items. This helps even cooking.
- 2
Pan-sear hot dogs
Heat a large nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the hot dogs in a single layer. Cook 6–8 minutes, turning every 1–2 minutes so each side browns slightly and the casing firms. Total cook time depends on thickness; look for even color and internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- 3
Toast buns
While the hot dogs cook (final 2 minutes), melt the unsalted butter in another skillet or spread on the cut sides of the buns. Place buns cut-side down in the skillet over medium-low heat and toast 1–2 minutes until golden and warm. Remove from heat.
Toppings (basic — kids style)
- 4
Prepare toppings
Place mustard, ketchup and sweet pickle relish into small squeeze bottles or ramekins for easy portioning for kids. Measure shredded cheddar into a small bowl.
- 5
Assemble hot dogs
Place one warmed bun on a plate. Lay a cooked hot dog into the bun. For a classic kid-friendly topping: squeeze about 1/2 tablespoon mustard and 1/2 tablespoon ketchup along the length of each hot dog (adjust to taste). Spoon about 1/2 tablespoon sweet pickle relish on top if desired. Sprinkle ~2 tablespoons shredded cheddar over the hot dog to melt slightly from the heat.
