Cheese Board
Bring cheeses to temperature
Remove all cheeses from refrigeration 30–60 minutes before serving so flavors and texture fully develop. Soft cheeses (Brie, chèvre) should be very near room temperature; hard cheeses (cheddar, Manchego) benefit from 30 minutes.
Prepare cheeses
Trim rind if desired (optional for Brie; leave on for character). Place each cheese on different areas of the board. For presentation, keep whole wedges or rounds where appropriate: leave Brie whole or cut a small wedge, slice Manchego into 0.5 cm thick wedges, crumble or leave a wedge of blue cheese, slice a few pieces of cheddar or serve a small block with knife, and leave goat cheese as a log for spreading.
Label or knife placement
Place an appropriate cheese knife or spreader next to each cheese (soft spreader for chèvre and Brie, forked knife for blue, sharp knife for hard cheeses). If desired, add a small card labeling each cheese.
Garnish cheeses with a few herb sprigs (thyme or rosemary) tucked near the Brie and Manchego for color.
Crackers & Bread
Arrange assorted crackers in small piles around the cheeses so guests can easily access a variety. If using a baguette, slice on a diagonal about 1 cm thick and toast lightly in a 200°C (390°F) oven for 6–8 minutes until just golden; allow to cool slightly before placing on the board.
Avoid overcrowding crackers directly beside very strong cheeses (like blue) to prevent flavor transfer; provide separate piles or plates if necessary.
Accompaniments
Spoon fig jam and place honey in a small shallow dish or jar. Position mustard in a small bowl near the cheddar and Manchego as a savory pairing.
Scatter Marcona almonds or mixed nuts in a small pile or dish. Place dried apricots or figs and fresh grapes in clusters around the board for color and palate-cleansing sweetness.
Add cornichons or small pickles in a small bowl near the blue cheese or cheddar for a tangy contrast.
Tools & Finish
Select a large wooden or slate board. Start by positioning the cheeses to create anchor points, then fill in with crackers, bread, fruits, nuts and condiments. Leave some negative space so the board doesn’t look crowded.
Provide 3–4 cheese knives/spreaders, small spoons for honey/jam, and napkins. Serve immediately once cheeses have warmed to room temperature.
