Method

Prep

1

Chill glass

If desired, place the serving glass (coupe, rocks, or margarita glass) in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill.

2

Pour the coarse salt onto a small plate. Cut the lime wheel in half; use one half to wet the rim of the chilled glass by running the cut lime edge around the lip.

3

Firmly press the moistened rim into the salt on the plate, rotating so salt adheres evenly. Set the glass aside.

Mixing

4

Combine ingredients

Add 2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.75 oz orange liqueur, and 0.5 oz simple syrup (optional) into a cocktail shaker.

5

Add ice and shake

Add about 6 ice cubes to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. This dilutes and chills the cocktail to the right balance.

6

Strain

Discard ice or water from the chilled glass if used. Double-strain the shaken margarita into the prepared glass over fresh ice if serving on the rocks, or fine-strain into the chilled glass without ice for a straight-up margarita.

Finish

7

Garnish the cocktail with the remaining lime wheel or a lime wedge placed on the rim. Serve immediately.

8

Taste and adjust for sweetness if needed: if too tart, add 0.25 oz simple syrup to the shaker and re-shake; if too sweet, reduce simple syrup next time or increase lime juice by 0.25 oz.
