Flan Base

Method

Prepare the Caramel

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and turns golden brown. Immediately pour the caramel into a round baking dish, swirling to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Prepare the Flan

  1. 2

    Blend Flan Ingredients

In a blender, combine 4 large eggs, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 1 tsp of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 3

    Pour Flan Mixture

Carefully pour the flan mixture over the hardened caramel in the baking dish.

Prepare the Chocolate Cake Layer

  1. 4

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of baking soda, and 1 tsp of salt.

  2. 5

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1 cup of milk, 1 tbs of vegetable oil, and 1 tsp of vanilla extract until well combined.

  3. 6

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Slowly stir in 1 cup of boiling water until the batter is smooth.

  4. 7

    Pour Chocolate Cake Batter

Gently pour the chocolate cake batter over the flan mixture in the baking dish. Do not stir; the batter will sink to the bottom.

Bake the Choco Flan

  1. 8

    Prepare the Water Bath

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the baking dish.

  2. 9

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  3. 10

    Cool and Chill

Remove the baking dish from the water bath and allow it to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Serve

  1. 11

    Unmold and Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving platter and let the caramel flow over the top. Slice and enjoy your Choco Flan!
