1

Prepare glass

Select a chilled Old Fashioned (rocks) glass. If desired, chill the glass briefly by filling it with ice water while you prepare ingredients, then discard the water.

2

Sweeten

If using a sugar cube: place the sugar cube in the bottom of the glass, add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters and about 1/4 teaspoon of water, then muddle until the sugar is mostly dissolved into a paste. If using simple syrup: add 1/2 teaspoon simple syrup and 2 dashes Angostura bitters to the glass and stir to combine.

3

Add whiskey

Pour 2 ounces of Japanese whiskey into the glass over the bitters-sugar mixture.

4

Ice and stir

Add one large clear ice cube (or enough ice to fill the glass). Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds (10–15 full turns) until the drink is chilled, slightly diluted, and the outside of the glass becomes cold.

5

Garnish

Express the orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down 2–3 inches above the surface and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils; then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally, add one Luxardo cherry on a pick.

6

Serve immediately. Enjoy responsibly.
