Method

Cocktail

1

Prepare glass

Choose a highball or old-fashioned glass. Fill it with large ice cubes until about three-quarters full. Using large cubes chills the drink with less dilution.

2

Build

Pour 1 oz Campari into the glass over the ice, then add 1 oz sweet vermouth. Give a gentle stir with a bar spoon 6–8 times to combine and slightly chill the spirits without over-diluting.

3

Top and finish

Top the cocktail with about 2 oz chilled club soda (adjust to taste). Stir gently once more to integrate the soda with 2–3 strokes.

4

Garnish

Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a firm twist over the glass, then drop it in. Alternatively, add a thin orange slice on the rim.

5

Serve immediately with a straw or without, noting the Americano is a light, bitter-sweet, refreshing aperitivo-style cocktail.

6

Stronger or longer

For a stronger Americano, increase Campari and vermouth to 1.25 oz each and leave club soda at 2 oz. For a longer, more refreshing version, keep spirits at 1 oz each and increase soda to 3–4 oz.

7

Serve chilled

For an extra-chilled drink, chill the glass in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before building, or use pre-chilled ingredients and soda.
