Coffee Preparation
Measure coffee and water
Measure 2 tablespoons of packaged pre-ground coffee for an 8 oz cup. Measure 8 ounces (about 240 ml) of fresh cold water. Adjust coffee amount by 1 tablespoon more or less for stronger or weaker brew.
Heat water
Bring the measured water to just below boiling (195–205°F / 90–96°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds to one minute.
Prepare equipment
If using a drip machine, insert a paper filter and add the measured coffee to the brew basket. If using a pour-over, place the filter in the cone and add coffee. If using a French press, add coffee grounds directly to the carafe.
Bloom (for pour-over/French press)
Pour just enough hot water to wet the grounds (about twice the weight of the coffee; here ~30–40 ml) and let sit 30–45 seconds to allow gases to escape. This improves extraction. For drip machines skip if not applicable.
Brew
Pour the remaining hot water evenly over the grounds for pour-over, or start the drip machine so water passes through the grounds. For French press, pour water, stir gently, cover, and steep for 4 minutes.
Finish and serve
For pour-over or drip, allow all water to pass through the grounds into the mug. For French press, slowly press the plunger down. Pour brewed coffee into a mug.
Cleanup & Storage
Discard used grounds and filter (or compost them). Rinse or wash the coffee maker, French press, cone, and kettle after use. Wipe down surfaces.
Store remaining packaged coffee in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Use within a few weeks for best flavor; avoid storing in the refrigerator or freezer if frequently opened.
