Matcha Mixture

Method

Matcha Mixture

1

Sift and measure

Sift 2 tsp matcha powder into a small bowl or matcha bowl (chawan) to remove clumps. This ensures a smooth latte.

2

Add water

Pour 2 tbsp of hot water (about 80°C / 175°F) over the sifted matcha. Water should be hot but not boiling to avoid bitterness.

3

Sweeten and flavor

Add 1 tsp granulated sugar (or 1 tsp simple syrup) and 1 tsp vanilla extract if using. These are optional but help balance matcha's vegetal notes.

4

Whisk

Whisk the matcha vigorously in an M-shaped or W-shaped motion with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small milk frother for 15–30 seconds until it becomes frothy and fully dissolved with no lumps.

Milk

5

Heat milk

Heat 1 cup of milk gently on the stove or in the microwave to about 60–65°C (140–150°F). Do not boil. Heating time: about 60–90 seconds in microwave or 3–5 minutes on stove over medium-low heat.

6

Froth milk

Froth the warmed milk using a milk frother, French press, or whisk until it has a silky microfoam. If you want extra foam, reserve 2 tbsp of foamed milk for topping.

7

Combine

Pour the frothed milk slowly into the bowl or cup containing the prepared matcha, holding back foam with a spoon. Stir gently to combine, then spoon the reserved foam on top.

Garnish and Serve

8

Dust the top with a light pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of matcha powder for color and aroma. Serve immediately while hot.
