Espresso

Sweetener & Garnish (optional)

Method

Espresso

1

Preheat (optional)

Run a small amount of hot water through your portafilter, moka or espresso machine group head to preheat equipment; discard water. This helps preserve espresso temperature when pouring over ice.

2

Brew two shots (about 60 ml) of espresso using an espresso machine, stovetop Moka pot, or a strong AeroPress shot. Aim for a rich, concentrated brew with a crema on top. If you prefer slightly less intensity, brew 1.5–2 oz (45–60 ml).

Milk & Ice

3

Fill a tall serving glass (12–16 oz) with 1 cup of ice cubes, leaving room at the top for espresso without overflowing.

4

Pour 1 cup (240 ml) of cold milk over the ice. For a creamier mouthfeel, use whole milk or a barista-style plant milk. If you want a layered presentation, pour milk slowly over the ice.

Sweetener & Garnish (optional)

5

If using syrup, add 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup (or simple syrup) to the milk and stir gently to incorporate. Adjust sweetness to taste.

6

Pour the hot espresso slowly over the back of a spoon held just above the milk surface (or pour directly) so the espresso floats and creates a layered macchiato effect. The espresso will partially sink and partially layer, creating contrast between dark espresso and pale milk.

7

Finish with a teaspoon of caramel sauce drizzled on top if desired. Serve immediately with a straw so the drink can be stirred to combine.
