Method
Espresso
Grind
Weigh 18 g of espresso beans. Grind to a fine, slightly-finer-than-table-salt consistency appropriate for your espresso machine (fine espresso grind).
Dose and tamp
Dose the 18 g ground coffee into the portafilter basket. Distribute evenly and tamp with moderate, level pressure to form a smooth puck.
Brew espresso
Lock the portafilter into the espresso machine and brew approximately 36 ml of espresso. Aim for a shot time of about 25–30 seconds (adjust grind slightly to achieve this). If using a double shot basket, you will get ~36 ml; if using a different machine, target the same liquid yield.
Assembly
Prepare glass
Fill a 12–16 oz (350–450 ml) serving glass with about 1 cup (approx. 240–250 ml) of ice cubes. If you prefer a slightly weaker drink, use more ice.
Add cold water
Pour 120 ml cold water over the ice. This is the typical water-to-espresso ratio for a classic iced Americano (about 1:3 by volume), but adjust to taste.
Pour espresso
Immediately after brewing, pour the hot 36 ml espresso over the ice and water. Pouring hot espresso over ice rapidly chills it and preserves crema flavor while diluting slightly.
Sweeten (optional)
If you want a sweetened iced Americano, add about 15 ml (1 tablespoon) simple syrup or preferred liquid sweetener now and stir until dissolved. Avoid granulated sugar that won't dissolve in cold beverage.
Serve
Stir gently to combine, taste, and adjust water or sweetener if needed. Serve immediately with a straw or stirrer. Enjoy.
