Matcha Base

Method

Matcha Base

1

Sift matcha

Place 2 tsp matcha powder into a small fine-mesh sieve over a bowl or wide cup and tap or push through to remove clumps. This yields a smoother latte.

2

Bloom matcha

Pour 60 ml hot water (not boiling; about 80°C / 175°F) over the sifted matcha. Add 1 tsp granulated sugar or 1 tsp simple syrup. Whisk vigorously in an M-shaped motion with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small handheld frother for 15–30 seconds until frothy and fully dissolved.

Milk & Ice

3

Assemble glass

Fill a 12–16 oz glass with 1 cup ice cubes.

4

Add milk

Pour 1 cup cold milk over the ice. If using vanilla extract or condensed milk for extra flavor/creaminess, add 1/4 tsp vanilla and 1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk to the milk and stir gently to combine.

5

Combine matcha and milk

Slowly pour the whisked matcha over the back of a spoon or directly over the milk/ice to create a layered effect. Stir before drinking, or serve as-is for a gradient look. If you prefer the drink blended and extra frothy, transfer the iced milk and matcha to a blender and pulse 2–3 times until smooth.

Garnish

6

Lightly dust 1/4 tsp matcha powder over the top through a small sieve for a finishing flourish. Serve immediately with a straw.
