Cold Brew Concentrate

Method

Cold Brew Concentrate

1

Combine

Place 1 cup coarsely ground coffee in a clean 1‑quart (or larger) jar, pitcher, or brew vessel. Pour 4 cups cold filtered water over the grounds in an even stream so all grounds are saturated. Gently stir with a spoon or chopstick for 10–15 seconds to ensure dry pockets are wetted.

2

Steep

Cover the vessel with a lid or plastic wrap and let steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16 to 20 hours. Room temperature yields a slightly brighter extraction; refrigerated steeping yields a cleaner, less acidic profile.

3

Strain

After steeping, strain the concentrate through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth, a coffee filter, nut-milk bag, or a purpose-built cold-brew filter into a clean container. If using cheesecloth, fold it for multiple layers to catch sediment. Allow it to drip without pressing to avoid over-extraction and grit.

4

Second Strain (optional)

If you want clearer brew, pass the liquid through a paper coffee filter or a second layer of fine mesh. This removes finer particles and results in a smoother cup.

5

Store

Seal the concentrate and refrigerate. Homemade cold-brew concentrate keeps well for up to 10–14 days; for best flavor consume within 7 days.

To Serve (optional)

6

Dilute

Cold-brew concentrate is typically served diluted 1:1 with water or milk. For a standard serving, combine 1/2 cup concentrate with 1/2 cup cold water or 1/2 cup milk in a glass. Adjust ratio to taste (2:1 for stronger, 3:1 for lighter).

7

Sweeten

If you like it sweetened, stir in simple syrup (2 tablespoons per cup of diluted drink) while the brew is cold so it mixes easily. Adjust amount to taste.

8

Serve Over Ice

Fill a glass with ice cubes, pour diluted cold brew over ice, add milk if desired, stir gently, and enjoy.
