Cocktail
Rim + Garnish
Method
Prepare Glass
Half-Sugared Rim
Chill a highball or Collins glass in the freezer for 5 minutes. Rub the lime or grapefruit wedge around half of the glass rim (cover roughly 50% of the circumference). Dip only the wetted half of the rim into the granulated sugar spread on a small plate so the sugar adheres and creates a half-sugared rim. Set the glass aside.
Make Cocktail
Cut the half grapefruit (or use half of a whole fruit if using whole quantity). Reserve one thin slice for garnish. Cut remaining fruit into 1–2 wedges and place in the bottom of a cocktail shaker or a sturdy mixing glass.
Add the agave nectar and fresh lime juice to the shaker with the grapefruit wedges. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently muddle 4–6 times: press to release juice and a little oil from the grapefruit peel but avoid pulverizing the pith (which can add bitterness). You want about 1–1.5 tablespoons of fresh grapefruit juice and some pulp in the shaker.
Add the vodka, fresh lemonade, and a handful of ice (about 1 cup) to the shaker. Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink and to mix the agave with the citrus.
Fill the prepared half-sugared glass with fresh ice. Double-strain the cocktail into the glass through a fine mesh strainer to remove large pulp and most solids, allowing a small amount of fine pulp for texture and visual appeal.
Garnish with the reserved thin grapefruit slice or a twist on the sugared side of the rim. Optionally drop a small pinch of superfine sugar on the sugared rim to enhance sparkle.
Serve immediately with a short stirring straw. Advise guest to avoid stirring so the half-sugared rim remains intact; lift to sip from the sugared side for a sweet-citrus contrast.
