Sour Mix (house quick)
Method
Prep
Make quick sour mix
Combine 0.5 oz fresh lime juice and 0.5 oz simple syrup in a small container and stir. This yields the 0.5 oz 'Simple sour' used in the cocktail.
Prepare rim
On a small plate combine 1 tbsp red sanding sugar and 1 tsp coarse salt if you want a sweet-salty contrast (omit salt for fully sweet rim). Rub the lime wedge around the glass rim to wet it, then dip the rim into the sugar mixture, twisting to coat evenly. Set glass aside to let the rim set for 30–60 seconds.
Build & Shake
Fill a cocktail shaker with the 6 oz of ice for chilling.
Add 2 oz Milagro Reposado tequila, 0.75 oz Solerno blood orange liqueur, 1 oz fresh blood orange juice, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz of the prepared quick sour mix into the shaker.
Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the shaker is very cold and the exterior has frosted.
Serve
Fill the prepared glass with 4 oz fresh ice. Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the glass to remove ice shards and pulp (use a Hawthorne and a fine mesh strainer if available).
Garnish with a blood orange wheel hooked on the rim and optionally a lime wedge. Serve immediately.
