Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the granulated sugar and continue to beat until light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

  6. 6

    Add Food Coloring

Add the purple food coloring to the batter and mix until the desired lilac color is achieved.

  7. 7

    Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  8. 8

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 9

    Make the Frosting

In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and mix until smooth.

  2. 10

    Add Cream and Vanilla

Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract to the mixture. Beat until fluffy and well combined.

  3. 11

    Color the Frosting

Add the purple food coloring to the frosting and mix until the desired color is achieved.

Assembly

  1. 12

    Frost the Cake

Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

  2. 13

    Decorate

Use any leftover frosting to create decorative swirls or patterns on the cake. Optionally, add edible flowers for a more decorative touch.
