Base Spirits & Fortified

Method

Build & Stir (Spirit-forward base)

1

Measure and combine

Add gin (2 oz), bourbon (1 oz), aged rum (1 oz), cognac (0.5 oz), sweet vermouth (0.5 oz), dry vermouth (0.25 oz) and amaro (0.25 oz, optional) to a mixing glass or large shaker without ice.

2

Add modifiers

Add orange liqueur (0.5 oz), maraschino liqueur (0.25 oz), simple syrup (0.5 tbsp) and bitters (3 dashes Angostura, 1 dash orange) to the mixing glass.

3

Add citrus

Add fresh lemon juice (0.5 oz) and fresh lime juice (0.25 oz). These small amounts brighten the heavy spirit mix without making it a sour.

4

Ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice. Stir gently but thoroughly for 30–45 seconds (or about 20–30 rotations) until the liquid is well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a slightly more diluted cocktail, stir up to 60 seconds.

5

Strain

Place a large ice cube in a chilled rocks glass (or use chilled coupe if preferred). Double-strain the mixture into the glass using a Hawthorne and fine strainer to remove any small ice shards and pulp.

Finish & Garnish

6

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the surface and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils, then rub the peel on the rim and drop it into the glass.

7

Skewer a Luxardo or brandied cherry and place it on the rim or float it in the drink.

8

Serve immediately. Advise the guest to sip slowly — this is a high-proof, complex spirit-forward cocktail meant to be savored.
