Method

Cocktail

1

Prepare and measure

Chill a coupe or Nick & Nora glass by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

2

Add 1 oz Basil Hayden bourbon, 1 oz Amaro Abano, 3 tsp fresh lemon juice, and 3 tsp agave syrup to a cocktail shaker.

3

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup or enough to nearly fill the shaker).

4

Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds. Aim for a cold, well-diluted, slightly frothy mix — the shake should feel very cold to the hand.

5

Dump the ice or water from the chilled coupe/Nick & Nora and double-strain the cocktail into the glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove shards of ice and any pulp.

Garnish & serve

6

Express the oils of a lemon twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a quick snap. Optionally rub the twist rim of the glass and drop it in, or float a thin lemon wheel on the surface.

7

Serve immediately. The recipe yields a balanced, slightly bitter-sour Paper Plane with aromatic lemon top note.
