Cocktail

Method

Prepare Glass & Muddle

1

Choose glass

Select a rocks glass (old-fashioned glass). Place one large ice cube (big rock) in the freezer or set aside if already prepared.

2

Add the orange slice (or half wheel) and one Luxardo cherry to the bottom of the glass. Add 0.25 oz simple or demerara syrup and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.

3

Gently muddle the orange and cherry together 3–4 times. The goal is to release oils from the orange peel and some cherry syrup — do not pulverize; avoid extracting too much bitter pith from the orange.

Build Cocktail

4

Add 2 oz Gentleman Jack to the glass over the muddled fruit and bitters.

5

If you prefer slightly more dilution, add 0.25 oz filtered water (optional).

6

Stir gently with a bar spoon 12–15 full rotations (about 15–20 seconds) to properly chill and integrate the ingredients and to achieve slight dilution. Make sure to reach the surface of the large ice cube so the cube chills the drink effectively.

Finish & Garnish

7

Express an orange peel over the glass by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the drink and giving it a quick twist to release the oils onto the surface, then rub the peel along the rim and drop it into the glass beside the cherry.

8

Place the big rock into the glass (if not already), ensure the muddled fruit remains mostly at the bottom, and present with the Luxardo cherry visible as garnish.

9

Serve immediately with a short straw or no straw so the drinker can nose the orange oils and whiskey.
