Method
Coffee
Grind beans
Measure 0.33 cups (about 55–60 g) of whole coffee beans. Grind to a medium-coarse texture if using a pour-over or drip method, or medium-fine for an espresso-style brew. Use a burr grinder for consistent particle size.
Heat water
Bring 300 ml filtered cold water to a boil in a kettle, then let it rest for 30 seconds to reach ~93–96°C (200–205°F). Separately have 540 ml of brewing water ready if using pour-over or drip; the 300 ml is for small-scale/equipment heating or for espresso machines that require topping up.
Bloom (for pour-over or French press)
Place the ground coffee in your brewer (pour-over cone, French press, or drip basket). Pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of coffee; for 55 g coffee use ~110 g/ml) to saturate grounds and let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2.
Brew
Continue pouring the remaining brewing water slowly and evenly over the grounds for pour-over (total brew water 540 ml) aiming for a total contact time of 3–4 minutes. For French press, pour all 540 ml, stir gently, cover, and steep 4 minutes before pressing. For drip, allow the machine to complete the cycle.
Tea
Heat water
Bring 480 ml fresh cold water to a rolling boil (100°C / 212°F) for black tea. If using green or white tea, bring to 75–85°C instead. Use filtered water for best flavor.
Prepare tea
Place 2 tsp loose-leaf black tea (or 2 tea bags) into a teapot or two cups. If using a tea infuser, ensure it has enough room to expand.
Steep
Pour the hot water over the tea leaves. Steep black tea for 3–5 minutes depending on desired strength (4 minutes is typical). For green tea, steep 1.5–3 minutes at lower temperature. Do not over-steep to avoid bitterness.
