Cocktail Base

Method

Cocktail Base

  1. 1

    Prepare citrus and syrup

If using fresh lemon, squeeze 1/2 ounce (about half a small lemon) of fresh lemon juice. Measure 1/4 ounce simple syrup and set both aside.

  2. 2

Choose a chilled pint glass or beer glass. If you prefer the beer very cold, chill the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes beforehand.

  3. 3

Add 4 ice cubes to the glass only if you prefer your beer over ice. (Note: adding ice will dilute and chill faster; many prefer beer without ice.)

  4. 4

Pour 12 fl oz Beck's (or other lager) slowly into the glass, tilting the glass to reduce excessive foam. Leave a little head as desired.

  5. 5

Add the 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice and 1/4 oz simple syrup directly into the beer. Stir gently once with a bar spoon or long spoon to combine — stir slowly to avoid flattening the beer.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 6

Twist a lemon peel over the glass to express aromatic oils, then drop the peel in or hang a lemon wheel on the rim as garnish.

  2. 7

Taste and adjust: if you want it sweeter, add another 1/4 oz simple syrup; for more brightness, add a few drops more lemon juice. Serve immediately while the beer is cold and carbonated.
