Method
Dot's for Tots - Hot Dog & Chips
- 1
Prepare the oven and chips
Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F). If using frozen crinkle-cut chips, spread them in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment or lightly oiled. Drizzle 2 tablespoons vegetable oil over the chips, toss gently to coat, then spread evenly. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon black pepper (optional). Bake for 18–22 minutes, turning once halfway through, until golden and crisp. If using ready-made chips, skip oven steps and set aside in a bowl at room temperature.
- 2
Cook the hot dogs
While chips are in the oven, cook the hot dogs. For multi-kid households, you can simmer, grill, or pan-sear. To pan-sear: heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the hot dogs and cook 6–8 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and heated through. For grilling, preheat medium-high heat and grill 4–6 minutes. For simmering, place hot dogs in a saucepan, cover with water, bring to a gentle simmer and cook 5–6 minutes. Drain if simmered.
- 3
Toast buns and assemble condiments
Spread about 1/2 tablespoon softened butter inside each bun (total 2 tablespoons). Place buns buttered-side down on a warm skillet over medium heat for about 1 minute until lightly toasted, or place on the oven rack for 2–3 minutes during the last oven cycle for the chips. Open buns and spread about 1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard and 1/2 teaspoon ketchup inside each bun. Add about 1/2 tablespoon sweet pickle relish to each if using.
- 4
Assemble the hot dogs
Place one cooked hot dog in each toasted bun. Sprinkle roughly 1/4 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese over two hot dogs and 1/4 cup over the other two (about 1 cup total distributed evenly). Add 2 pickle slices to each hot dog if desired.
- 5
Final crisp and serve
If you prefer melted cheese, place filled hot dogs on the baking sheet during the last 2–3 minutes of the chips' bake time and broil briefly until cheese melts (watch closely). Remove chips and hot dogs from oven. Portion chips into small bowls or paper cones alongside each hot dog. Serve immediately while hot. Provide extra mustard, ketchup, and napkins for tots.
