1

Chill glass

Place an old fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the drink to chill.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker, add 2 tablespoons Fernet‑Branca, 1/4 tablespoon simple syrup and 1/2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. The small amount of acid and sweetness balances the intense bitterness of the Fernet.

3

Add ice and stir

Add a generous amount of cubed ice (about 1 cup) to the mixing glass. Stir briskly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted.

4

Prepare serving glass

If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump the water and add one large ice cube or a few fresh cubes to the glass. If using the freezer method, add fresh ice now.

5

Strain

Using a strainer, pour the chilled, mixed Fernet over the ice in the serving glass.

6

Top (optional)

If you prefer a lightly softened finish, top with about 1 tablespoon soda water and give the drink one gentle stir to combine. This is optional — many serve Fernet neat over ice.

7

Garnish and serve

Express an orange twist over the surface to spritz oils, then rub the peel on the glass rim and drop it into the drink. Serve immediately.

Use the mixing glass or shaker to combine and chill ingredients, a bar spoon to stir, and a strainer to pour into the serving glass. A chilled glass improves the drinking experience.
