Method
Honey Syrup (make ahead)
- 1
Cocktail
- 2
Chill glass
Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
- 3
Measure and combine
In a cocktail shaker, add 1.5 oz amaro, 1 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz honey syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.
- 4
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (enough to come near the top), seal, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and slightly frosted.
- 5
Prepare serving glass
Empty the chilled glass of ice or remove from freezer. If serving on the rocks, place a large ice cube in the rocks glass.
- 6
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or over the large ice cube in the rocks glass using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove small shards of ice and any pulp.
- 7
Express and garnish
Take the orange peel, hold it with the outside facing down above the drink, and give it a firm twist to express oils over the surface. Rub the peel briefly on the rim if desired, then drop it into the drink as garnish.
- 8
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip and note the interplay of bitter amaro, warm bourbon, sweet vermouth, bright lemon, and honeyed balance.
