Method
Prepare water and tea
Heat water to the correct temperature
Pour 12 oz (about 350 ml) fresh cold water into a kettle and heat until it reaches about 175°F (80°C). If you don't have a thermometer, heat until small bubbles begin to form and the water is steaming but not vigorously boiling.
Measure tea
Place 2 teaspoons of loose-leaf green tea into a tea infuser or directly into a teapot. For weaker tea, use 1.5 tsp; for stronger, use up to 2.5 tsp.
Brew
Steep
Pour the hot (≈175°F/80°C) water over the tea leaves. Cover the teapot or cup to retain heat and steep for 2 to 3 minutes. Steep closer to 2 minutes for a lighter, more delicate flavor; up to 3 minutes for fuller taste. Avoid steeping longer than 3 minutes to prevent bitterness.
Remove leaves
After steeping, remove the infuser or strain the leaves out of the tea immediately to stop extraction.
Finish and serve
Optional sweeten or flavor
If desired, add 1 teaspoon honey or sugar and stir until dissolved. Optionally squeeze 1 slice of fresh lemon or drop it into the cup for brightness, or add 2 fresh mint leaves for an herbal note. For a creamier cup (not traditional), stir in 2 tablespoons of warmed milk.
Cool and enjoy
Allow the tea to cool a moment if too hot, then serve in your cup and enjoy. If preparing iced green tea, let the brewed tea cool to room temperature then pour over ice.
