1

Prepare glass

Chill a rocks glass or short highball by filling it with ice and setting aside while you prepare the cocktail (about 2–3 minutes). Discard the ice just before building the drink.

2

Muddle mint

In a mixing glass or shaker, place the fresh mint leaves and the simple syrup (0.5 oz). Gently muddle the mint 6–8 times to release the oils and aroma — do not over-muddle to avoid bitterness.

3

Add citrus and spirit

Add the fresh lemon juice (0.75 oz) and Traverse City Straight Bourbon (2 oz) to the muddled mint and syrup.

4

Shake with ice

Add a handful of ice to the shaker (or mixing glass) and shake vigorously for about 10–12 seconds until well chilled (if using a mixing glass, stir briskly for 15–20 seconds).

5

Prepare serving glass

Fill the chilled rocks glass about three-quarters full with crushed ice.

6

Double-strain and build

Double-strain the shaken mixture over the crushed ice into the prepared glass to remove mint bits and ice shards. Top with chilled tonic water (about 2 oz) — pour gently to preserve carbonation.

7

Finish and garnish

Give the drink a gentle stir (1–2 turns) to integrate the tonic. Slap the mint sprig between your palms to release aromatics and place it on top of the drink along with the lemon wedge or wheel on the rim.

8

Serve

Serve immediately with a short straw or cocktail pick. Advise the drinker to lightly stir before sipping if the tonic has settled.
