Method

Tea Preparation

  1. 1

    Boil water

Pour 2 cups of cold water into a small saucepan or kettle and bring to a rolling boil over high heat (about 3–5 minutes depending on stove and kettle).

  2. 2

    Steep tea

Place 2 black tea bags into a teapot or directly into a heatproof mug. Pour the freshly boiled water over the tea bags, fully submerging them. Cover the pot or cup and let steep for 3–5 minutes for medium strength; steep 5–7 minutes for stronger flavor.

  3. 3

    Sweeten and finish

Remove the tea bags, pressing gently against the side with a spoon if you want a slightly stronger brew. Stir in 1 tsp sugar while the tea is hot so it dissolves evenly. Add 1 tablespoon milk if you prefer milk tea; stir to combine.

  4. 4

    Citrus option

If using lemon, cut the lemon half and squeeze 1/2 lemon into the tea after removing the tea bags (do not add milk if using lemon). Stir and taste; adjust sweetness as desired.

Optional Add-ins

  1. 5

    Honey substitution

If you prefer honey instead of sugar, add 1 tsp honey to the hot tea and stir until dissolved. Reduce sugar to 0 tsp if using honey.

  2. 6

    Mint infusion

For mint-flavored tea, bruise 4 fresh mint leaves lightly between your fingers and add them to the teapot or mug before pouring the boiling water. Remove the leaves when you remove the tea bags or after 3–5 minutes of steeping.

  3. 7

    Spiced variation

For a subtle spice note, stir in 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon into the hot tea after removing the tea bags. Adjust amount to taste.
