Preparation

Pizza

1. Preheat and prepare

Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it heats. Lightly flour a small baking sheet or piece of parchment paper for easy transfer.

2. Shape dough

Take 0.25 lb of pizza dough and on a lightly floured surface press and stretch it into a rough 6–7 inch round or rectangle about 1/4-inch thick — this will bake as one child-sized slice portion. Brush the top lightly with 1/2 tablespoon olive oil, leaving a tiny edge for the crust.

3. Sauce and cheese

Spread 3 tablespoons tomato pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving the outer 1/2-inch rim. Sprinkle 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella evenly, then dust 1 teaspoon grated Parmesan and 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano on top. Season very lightly with 1/8 teaspoon salt and a pinch (about 0.05 tsp) of pepper.

4. Bake

Transfer the pizza to the preheated oven (onto the stone or baking sheet). Bake 8–10 minutes, or until crust is golden at the edges and cheese is melted and bubbly. For an extra-brown top, switch to broil for 30–60 seconds while watching carefully.

5. Finish and slice

Remove pizza from oven and let rest 2 minutes. Slice into a single large 'slice' sized for a child or two small slices. Serve warm with ketchup and/or ranch on the side.

Potato Fries

6. Prep potatoes

Wash and scrub 1 medium russet potato. Cut into 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch sticks for fries. For extra-crisp fries, soak cut potatoes in cold water for 15–30 minutes, then drain and pat completely dry with paper towels.

7. Choose cooking method

You can fry or oven-bake depending on equipment and preference. Both methods below produce child-friendly fries.

8. Pan-fry / Deep fry (if frying)

Heat 1 cup vegetable oil in a cast-iron skillet or small deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add a single layer of potato sticks and fry 3–4 minutes, flipping if necessary, until golden and tender. Work in batches if needed. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Immediately season with 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/8 teaspoon paprika while hot.

9. Oven-bake (healthier option)

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Toss dried potato sticks with 1 tablespoon of the oil from the ingredient amount (portion of the 1 cup listed) until lightly coated — you will not need the full cup if baking; reserve remaining oil for another use. Spread in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake 18–22 minutes, turning halfway, until edges are golden and centers tender. Remove and immediately toss with 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/8 teaspoon paprika.

10. Keep warm and serve

If preparing ahead, keep fries warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven for up to 10 minutes. Plate the fries next to the pizza slice and provide 2 tablespoons each of ketchup and ranch on the side for dipping.
