1

Prepare glass

Place a large old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled with plenty of ice, add 2 oz Maker's Mark Bourbon, 0.5 oz Campari, 0.5 oz coffee liqueur, 0.75 oz Italian sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture vigorously with a bar spoon for 25–30 seconds (about 20–30 rotations) until the outside of the mixing glass is well chilled and properly diluted (you should see thin, silky texture and small shards of cracked ice).

4

Prepare serving glass

Discard ice or water from the chilled old-fashioned glass. Place a single large ice cube (or fresh ice) into the glass.

5

Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube using a julep or Hawthorne strainer to keep out shards of ice.

6

Express orange oil & garnish

Hold an orange peel about 3–4 inches above the drink and with the outside facing down, quickly fold or squeeze it to express the oils over the surface. Optionally rub the peel's rim on the glass, then drop the peel into the drink as a garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately. Advise the drinker to sip slowly to appreciate the interplay of bourbon warmth, Campari's bitter backbone, coffee liqueur depth, and rounded vermouth sweetness.
