Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Muddle

In a shaker or mixing glass, place the fresh mint leaves, fresh lime juice (0.5 oz) and simple syrup (0.25 oz). Gently muddle the mint 4–6 times to release aromatic oils without shredding the leaves.

  2. 2

    Add spirits and bitters

Add the vodka (2 oz) to the shaker. Add Angostura bitters (2 dashes) and orange bitters (1 dash). Add a small handful of ice (about 1/2 cup) to chill and briefly stir or give 6–8 gentle shakes to integrate flavors and cool the mixture.

  3. 3

    Prepare glass

Fill a mule mug or highball glass with the remaining ice (about 1/2 cup, total ice in glass should be ~1 cup). Strain the chilled mixture over the ice, using a fine strainer if you want to keep mint fragments out of the drink.

  4. 4

    Top and finish

Top the drink with ginger beer (4 oz). Give one or two gentle stirs to combine — avoid vigorous stirring to preserve carbonation. Taste and adjust: if you prefer sweeter, add up to 0.25 oz more simple syrup; if brighter, add a few drops more lime juice.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with the lime wheel or wedge and a fresh mint sprig. Clap the mint sprig between your palms once before adding it to the drink to release aromatics. Serve immediately with a straw or stirrer.
