Spritz Base

Citrus & Aromatics

Optional Enhancements

Method

Prepare Glass

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a large wine glass or stemmed spritz glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice and cold water while you gather ingredients to ensure the drink stays cold.

  2. 2

If you used ice and water to chill, empty the glass but leave the glass cold.

Build the Spritz

  1. 3

    Add ice

Fill the chilled glass about two-thirds full with fresh ice cubes.

  2. 4

    Measure and pour liqueur

Pour 1 fl oz of your chosen aperitif liqueur (Aperol or similar) over the ice. This provides the bitter-sweet, colorful backbone of the spritz.

  3. 5

    Add sparkling wine

Slowly pour 3 fl oz of chilled Prosecco (or dry sparkling wine) into the glass. Pour gently to preserve bubbles and to allow mixing rather than vigorous stirring.

  4. 6

    Top with soda

Add 1 fl oz of chilled dry sparkling water (club soda) to lengthen the drink and lighten the sweetness. If you prefer a drier spritz, reduce to 0.5 fl oz; for a lighter spritz increase to 1.5 fl oz.

  5. 7

    Optional bitters

If using, add 1 dash of orange bitters to deepen citrus aromatics. This is optional but recommended for more complexity.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 8

    Stir gently

Using a bar spoon or the back of a spoon, gently stir the drink once or twice to integrate ingredients without knocking out carbonation.

  2. 9

    Add citrus and herb garnish

Float one fresh orange wheel on top of the spritz. Add a lemon twist on the rim if desired. Tuck a fresh basil leaf or a small rosemary sprig alongside the orange wheel for an aromatic, coastal note.

  3. 10

Serve immediately while chilled and effervescent.
