Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh)
Garnish (optional)
Method
Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh)
- 1
Prepare turmeric-ginger paste
In a small bowl, mix the ground turmeric and grated fresh ginger with the 1 cup of water to form a smooth paste. This helps release flavor and avoids clumps when added to warm milk.
- 2
- 3
Add paste and spices
When the milk is steaming and small bubbles appear around the edges (after ~5 minutes), add the turmeric-ginger paste, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, and 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper. Whisk briskly to combine so the spices disperse evenly.
- 4
Simmer to infuse
Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. This time allows flavors and beneficial compounds from turmeric and ginger to infuse into the milk. If the mixture thickens or foams, lower the heat; you want a gentle simmer.
- 5
- 6
Strain (optional)
If you used fresh grated ginger that is fibrous or want a smoother drink, pour the milk through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a serving pot or individual cups to remove solids.
- 7
Serve
Pour the hot Haldi Doodh into four warmed mugs. Garnish each serving with a light dusting of ground cinnamon and turmeric (about 1/8 tsp each) and a sprinkle of chopped nuts if desired. Serve immediately.
