Porridge

Method

Porridge

1

Combine and heat

In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup rolled oats, 1 cup water, 1 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir briefly to distribute the oats evenly.

2

Bring to a simmer

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent the oats from sticking to the bottom. This should take about 3–5 minutes.

3

Cook to desired thickness

Reduce heat to low and simmer gently, stirring every 30 seconds, for 5–8 minutes until the oats are tender and the porridge has thickened to your liking. For creamier porridge, cook an extra minute and stir more; for looser porridge, add up to 2 tablespoons (30 ml) extra milk or water.

4

Finish

Remove the pan from heat. Stir in 1 tablespoon butter and 2 teaspoons brown sugar or maple syrup until melted and evenly combined. Taste and adjust salt or sweetener as desired.

Toppings (optional)

5

Divide the porridge into bowls. Top each serving with sliced banana, 2–3 tablespoons fresh berries, 1 tablespoon chopped nuts, and a sprinkle (about 1/4 teaspoon) of ground cinnamon.

6

Drizzle with 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup if you prefer extra sweetness. Serve immediately while hot.
