Bread & Spread
Fire & Finish
Method
Prep & Heat
While the pan heats, spread 1 tablespoon of butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. If your butter is hard, soften it briefly in the microwave (5–10 seconds) or cut into pats to make spreading easier.
Searing (the 'Fire')
oil the pan
Add 1 tablespoon neutral oil to the hot pan and tilt to coat the surface. The oil prevents sticking and promotes even browning.
Cook for 2–3 minutes without moving, until the buttered side is deep golden brown and caramelized. If the pan is very hot and browning too fast, lower the heat to medium-low to avoid burning.
flip and finish
Flip each slice and cook the dry side for 1–2 minutes until the bread is crisp but still tender inside. Remove to a wire rack or plate.
Assemble & Serve (Butter and Jam)
While the toast is still warm, spread an additional 1 tablespoon of butter over the toasted top of each slice so it begins to melt into the bread (use softened butter if needed).
Spoon 1½ tablespoons jam onto each slice and spread evenly. Use less or more jam to taste; the guideline above uses the 6 tablespoons total indicated in ingredients.
If using, rub the top of each toast lightly with a cut side of the garlic clove for a whisper of savory flavor (optional). Sprinkle a small pinch of sea salt flakes and a grind of black pepper over each slice to brighten the jam's sweetness (optional).
Serve immediately while warm and crisp. Leftovers can be stored loosely covered for up to 12 hours but are best fresh.
