1

Prepare glass

Place the sugar cube in an old-fashioned glass (or measure 1/2 tsp simple syrup). Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar cube (or into the syrup) and a very small splash of water (about 1/4 tsp) to help dissolve the sugar. Muddle until the sugar is mostly dissolved and aromatic.

2

Add whiskey and ice

Pour 2 oz bourbon or rye over the muddled sugar-bitter mix. Add one large clear ice cube (or several regular ice cubes) to the glass.

3

Stir

Stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 10–15 slow turns) to chill and slightly dilute the drink, integrating the flavors.

4

Garnish

Express the oils from an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel with the outer skin facing down and giving it a firm squeeze. Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink as garnish. Optionally add a maraschino cherry on a pick.

5

Optional soda

If desired, top with a very small splash (about 1/2 oz) of club soda for effervescence—add after stirring and before garnish.
