Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to thoroughly chill it.

2

Add ice to mixing glass

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with fresh ice (approximately 1 cup). Using fresh ice prevents over-dilution from partially melted ice.

3

Measure and pour spirits

Pour 2.5 oz vodka and 0.5 oz dry vermouth into the mixing glass over the ice. Adjust vermouth slightly to taste (less for a drier martini, more for a wetter one).

4

Stir (preferred) or shake

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until the outside of the mixing glass feels very cold. If you prefer a slightly more aerated and colder drink, shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds in a cocktail shaker. Note: stirring yields a clearer Vodkatini with a silkier mouthfeel.

5

Prepare garnish

If using a lemon twist: cut a 1-inch strip of lemon peel and gently squeeze it over the chilled glass to express the oils, then rub the rim with the peel. If using an olive: thread one olive onto a cocktail pick.

6

Strain and serve

Discard the ice water from the chilled glass (if used). Using a julep or fine strainer, double-strain the stirred/shaken cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass to avoid any ice shards.

If you expressed lemon oil, give the twist a final quick flick over the drink to release remaining oils, then drop it into the glass or discard it per preference. Alternatively, place the olive on the rim or drop it into the drink. Serve immediately.
