Coffee base

Sweetening & spice

Garnish (optional)

Method

Prepare coffee base

1

Brew and combine

Brew 2 cups of very strong coffee (use dark-roast beans, espresso, or double-strength drip). Preheat two heatproof mugs with hot water, then discard the water. Divide the brewed coffee evenly between the mugs (about 1 cup per mug).

2

Stir in 1 tablespoon dark rum and 1 tablespoon Kahlúa into each mug (total 2 tbs rum and 1 tbs Kahlúa across both mugs), mixing gently to combine.

Sweeten and spice

3

While the coffee is hot, add 1 tablespoon brown sugar (to be divided between mugs) and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (divide between mugs). Stir each mug until the sugar dissolves completely.

4

Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract total (½ tsp per mug) and stir once more to incorporate.

Prepare topping

5

In a small bowl, lightly whip 1 tablespoon heavy cream with 1 teaspoon powdered sugar until just thickened but still pourable (soft peaks are not necessary). This should make a small dollop enough for two cups.

6

Spoon a tablespoon of the lightly sweetened cream onto each mug's surface so it floats on top of the hot coffee.

7

Grate about 1/4 teaspoon fresh nutmeg over the cream and coffee for aroma and garnish.

Garnish and serve

8

Add an optional cinnamon stick and an orange twist to each mug for stir and aroma. Serve immediately while hot.
