Coffee

Method

Coffee

1

Brew 1.5 cups of strong hot coffee. Use freshly ground dark roast beans for best flavor. While brewing (or immediately after), stir in 1 teaspoon granulated sugar until dissolved so the sweetness incorporates evenly.

2

Preheat the serving mug by rinsing with hot water, then discard water. Pour the hot coffee into the warmed mug, leaving about 1/2 inch headroom for liquor and cream.

Liquor

3

Add 2 tablespoons (about 1 oz) Kahlúa to the hot coffee. If using, add 1/2 oz dark rum for extra depth. Stir gently for 10–15 seconds to combine the liqueur evenly with the coffee.

Cream & Garnish

4

Lightly Creamed (easy)

Pour 2 tablespoons of cold heavy cream or half-and-half over the back of a spoon held just above the coffee surface so the cream floats and creates a layer. Do not stir if you want the layered look; let drinker swirl to incorporate.

5

Whipped Topping (richer)

Alternatively, top the coffee with ~2 tablespoons of softly whipped cream for a richer finish. This also insulates heat and looks classic.

6

Sprinkle ~1 teaspoon grated or shaved dark chocolate over the cream or whipped topping. Optionally place 1–2 whole coffee beans on top for garnish.

7

Serve immediately while hot. Provide a small spoon so the drinker can stir cream into the coffee if desired.
