Method
Fresh Orange Juice
Prep Oranges
Wash the oranges under cool running water and pat dry. Roll each orange on the countertop with the palm of your hand pressing firmly to soften and loosen the juice. Cut each orange in half crosswise.
Extract Juice
Using a manual citrus juicer or an electric reamer, juice the orange halves into a bowl or large measuring cup. Press and twist each half to extract as much juice as possible. For about 6 medium navel oranges you should yield roughly 2 to 2 1/2 cups (480–600 ml) of juice.
Strain (Optional)
If you prefer a smoother juice like retail Simply Orange, pour the freshly extracted juice through a fine-mesh sieve or chinois into a clean container to remove pulp and seeds. Use the back of a spoon to press solids to extract additional liquid. Discard solids or reserve for baking.
Adjust Texture & Sweetness
Taste the juice. If it’s too thick or intensely flavored, stir in up to 1/4 cup (60 ml) cold water to reach desired consistency. If you prefer slightly sweeter juice, dissolve a small pinch of granulated sugar (or simple syrup) into the juice and taste again. Refrigerate for 15–30 minutes if serving very cold.
Chill with Ice
To serve immediately and keep the juice cold without diluting too much, add 1 cup of ice cubes to the serving pitcher or pour juice over ice-filled glasses.
Garnish & Serve
Place an orange slice on the rim of each glass and add a mint sprig if using. Pour the chilled orange juice into glasses and serve immediately.
