Method
Lemonade Base (Zero Sugar)
Juice and zest
Roll lemons on the counter to loosen juices, then cut and juice until you have 1/2 cup (about 2–3 lemons). If using, zest one lemon before juicing to get 1 tablespoon of zest.
Dissolve sweetener
In a large measuring cup or small saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons of liquid zero-calorie sweetener with 1/2 cup of the cold water. Stir (or warm very briefly on low heat if using a granulated sweetener) until evenly mixed so it will blend smoothly into the lemonade.
Combine
In a 2-quart pitcher, pour the remaining 3 1/2 cups cold water, add the fresh lemon juice, the sweetener mixture, and the lemon zest. Stir vigorously for 30–45 seconds to fully combine and incorporate the zest.
Adjust
Taste the lemonade and adjust sweetness or acidity. For a brighter tartness add up to 1 tablespoon more lemon juice. For more sweetness add 1/2–1 tablespoon more liquid sweetener (or equivalent). Stir again after adjusting.
Chill & Serve
Add 2 cups of ice to the pitcher to chill quickly, or refrigerate the lemonade uncovered until well chilled (about 30–45 minutes) if you prefer less dilution. If refrigerated, add ice to individual glasses when serving.
Pour into 4 tall glasses filled with ice (about 1/2 cup ice per glass). Garnish each glass with a lemon slice and a sprig of mint. Serve immediately.
If making ahead: store the lemonade covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Stir gently before serving as separation may occur. Add fresh ice and garnish just before serving.
