Wine Bottle Preparation
Serving Glassware & Optional Accoutrements
Method
Wine Bottle Preparation
Chill or open to serve
If the bottle has been stored at cellar temperature (55–65°F / 13–18°C), chill it for 20–30 minutes in a refrigerator to bring it to ~56–60°F (13–16°C) for optimal Pinot Noir drinking temperature. Alternatively, place the bottle in an ice bucket with 4 cups of ice and a small amount of water for 8–12 minutes to reach serving temperature more quickly.
If the bottle is already at serving temperature, remove it from refrigeration 5–10 minutes before pouring so aromas relax.
Decanting & Aeration
Decanting (recommended but optional)
Inspect the bottle for sediment (unlikely in a young 2023 release). If you wish to aerate, pour the wine slowly into a decanter in one steady stream. Allow it to sit for 20–45 minutes to open up; delicate Pinot Noir benefits from gentle aeration to reveal fruit and floral notes without flattening acidity.
Using an aeration pourer
If using an aeration pourer, attach it to the bottle and pour directly into glasses, allowing a few minutes between pours for the wine to briefly breathe.
Pouring & Serving
Place a small carafe of water nearby for palate cleansing between sips. Offer plain bread or mild, not heavily spiced, cheese to taste alongside the wine to experience food-pairing interactions.
Encourage guests to observe the wine’s color, swirl gently, inhale to assess aromas, then take small sips to evaluate flavors and structure. Re-taste after 15–30 minutes—the wine may open further.
Storage of Leftovers
If you don’t finish the bottle, re-cork or use a vacuum sealer and refrigerate. Consume within 2–4 days for best expression. For longer storage, consider a gas-preserving wine preserver.
