Fresh Orange Juice

Method

Fresh Orange Juice

1

Prepare the oranges

Wash the oranges under cool running water. Roll each orange on the countertop with firm pressure to help release juices. Cut each orange in half crosswise.

2

Juice the oranges

Using a handheld or electric citrus juicer, squeeze the juice from each orange half into a measuring cup or bowl. If you prefer pulp-free juice, strain the collected juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean pitcher, pressing gently on solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Expected yield from 6 large oranges: about 2 to 2 1/2 cups (480–600 ml).

3

Adjust sweetness and acidity

Taste the fresh orange juice. Add the granulated sugar and fresh lemon juice. Stir until the sugar dissolves. If the oranges are very sweet, you can omit the sugar. The lemon juice brightens the flavor and balances sweetness.

4

Dilute and chill

If the juice is very concentrated, stir in up to 1 cup (240 ml) cold water to reach your preferred strength. Add ice cubes to chill immediately, or refrigerate the strained juice for at least 30 minutes to serve cold. Stir again before serving.

5

Serve

Pour the juice into glasses over ice if desired. Garnish each glass with a mint leaf or an orange slice if using. Serve immediately for best flavor.

6

Storage

Store any leftover juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Shake or stir before serving, as natural separation will occur.
