Method

Cocktail Base

1

Measure and combine

Add 4 oz rye whiskey and 2 oz sweet vermouth to a chilled mixing glass.

2

Add bitters and ice

Add 4 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass, then add large ice cubes until the glass is about three-quarters full.

3

Stir to chill and dilute

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until the outside of the mixing glass is well chilled and the liquid is slightly diluted and clear.

4

Strain

Place a strainer over the serving glasses (2 old-fashioned or coupe glasses) and evenly divide and strain the mixed cocktail into each glass, two neat pours of approximately 3 oz each.

Garnish

5

Express orange oils

Take an orange peel and, over each glass, hold it with the outer (zest) side facing down and firmly squeeze to express the citrus oils across the surface of the cocktail.

6

Rub peel and garnish

Optionally rub the peel around the rim of each glass for extra aroma, then drop one orange peel into each glass or twist and place on the rim.

7

Add cherry

Place one maraschino cherry into each glass as a finishing touch.

Serve

8

Serve immediately, neat. Sip slowly to enjoy the balance of rye spice, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Adjust future batches by varying whiskey or vermouth ratio to taste.
