Famous for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor with roasted caramel malt for a subtle sweetness and a combination of cluster and cascade hops, this true original delivers a well-balanced taste with very distinct character. Born from a historic recipe that was resurrected in 1987, Yuengling Traditional Lager is a true classic.

In a large mash tun, heat 19 liters of water to approximately 66°C (150°F). Add 6 kg of pale malt and 1 kg of caramel malt. Stir well to ensure all the grains are saturated.

Prepare the Mash

Allow the mash to rest for 60 minutes at 66°C (150°F) to convert the starches into fermentable sugars.

Mash Rest

After the mash rest, sparge (rinse) with hot water to extract the sugars. Collect the wort in your brew kettle.

Sparging

Bring the wort to a boil. Once boiling, add 30 g of cluster hops and boil for 60 minutes.

Boil the Wort

In the last 15 minutes of the boil, add 20 g of cascade hops to introduce aroma and flavor.

After boiling, cool the wort quickly using a wort chiller or an ice bath to reach around 20°C (68°F).

Cooling the Wort

Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermentation vessel. Pitch 11 g of lager yeast into the wort and seal the vessel with an airlock. Allow it to ferment at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 53°F) for 2 to 3 weeks.

Fermentation

After fermentation is complete, dissolve 150 g of priming sugar in a small amount of water and add it to the beer. Bottle the lager and cap securely.

Bottling

Allow the bottled lager to condition at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks before refrigerating.

Conditioning

Chill the lager and serve in a pint glass. Enjoy your homemade traditional amber lager!
