Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the drink.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

Add the gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca to a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice. Use equal parts gin and sweet vermouth (1 oz each) and 1 teaspoon Fernet-Branca.

  3. 3

    Stir

Stir the mixture gently for about 20–30 seconds (15–20 full strokes) until well chilled and properly diluted. The drink should feel very cold to the touch of the mixing glass and appear slightly viscous.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the ice water from the chilled serving glass (if used) and dry briefly, or remove the glass from the freezer.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer, strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils from an orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a firm pinch. Optionally run the rim with the twist and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

    Serve immediately. Enjoy responsibly.
