Method

Prepare Glass

  1. 1

    chill the martini glass

Place the martini (or coupe) glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to thoroughly chill the glass. If using ice water, discard it and dry the glass before pouring.

Mix

  1. 2

    measure

Measure 1 oz gin and 1 oz dry vermouth. A 50-50 Martini is equal parts gin and dry vermouth.

  2. 3

    add ice

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with ice (approximately 1 cup).

  3. 4

    stir

Pour the gin and dry vermouth over the ice. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Stirring, not shaking, keeps the drink clear and silky.

Strain & Garnish

  1. 5

    strain

Using a julep strainer or the shaker's strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini glass, leaving any small ice chips behind.

  2. 6

    garnish

Express the oils of a lemon twist over the surface of the cocktail, then drop it in, or perch a green olive on a cocktail pick and place it in the glass, according to preference.

  3. 7

    Serve immediately while cold.
