Brown Rice
Method
Brown Rice
Rinse and measure
Place 1 cup long-grain brown rice in a fine-mesh sieve. Rinse under cold running water, rubbing the grains gently with your fingers for about 20–30 seconds, until the water runs mostly clear. Drain thoroughly. Rinsing removes surface starch and prevents gumminess.
Toast (optional)
In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, heat 1 tablespoon butter or oil over medium heat. Add the drained rice and toast, stirring constantly, for 2–3 minutes until the rice smells slightly nutty. This step is optional but improves flavor and keeps grains separate.
Add water and salt
Pour 2 1/4 cups water into the saucepan with the rice. Add 1/2 teaspoon fine salt and stir once to combine. Increase heat to high and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Simmer gently
As soon as the water boils, reduce the heat to low so the pot is at a bare simmer. Cover tightly with the lid and cook undisturbed for 40–45 minutes, until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Avoid lifting the lid during this time.
Rest
Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 10 minutes. This allows remaining steam to finish cooking the grains and firms the rice for fluffing.
