Method

Brewed Coffee

  1. 1

    Measure beans

Weigh or measure whole coffee beans to a ratio of about 1:16 (coffee to water) for a medium-strength cup. For a single 8-oz (approximately 237 ml) cup, use about 14–15 grams coffee (approximately 0.054 cups whole beans).

  2. 2

    Grind beans

Grind the measured beans to the grind size appropriate for your brewing method: medium-coarse for pour-over or drip, medium for automatic drip, fine for espresso, or coarse for French press. Grind just before brewing for maximum freshness.

  3. 3

    Heat water

Heat filtered water to 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it sit for 30 seconds.

  4. 4

    Bloom (for pour-over / drip)

If using pour-over or drip: place a filter in the dripper and rinse briefly with hot water to remove paper flavor and preheat equipment. Add ground coffee to the filter and pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of the coffee) to saturate grounds. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to allow CO2 to escape.

  5. 5

    Brew

Continue pouring or start the brew cycle, adding remaining hot water slowly and evenly over the grounds for pour-over (total brew time ~2.5–4 minutes depending on method). For drip machine, start the machine and let it complete the cycle. For French press: pour all hot water over grounds, stir gently, and steep 4 minutes before plunging. For espresso: pull a shot according to your machine's instructions.

  6. 6

    Serve

Once brewing is complete, pour coffee into a pre-warmed mug. If using a carafe, swirl gently to unify flavor before pouring.

Optional Add-ins

  1. 7

Add milk or cream to taste. Heat milk before adding if you prefer a warmer cup or steamed texture; steam or froth 2–3 tbs for a single cup if desired.

  2. 8

Stir in sugar, vanilla extract, or cinnamon to taste. Start with the specified amounts (1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/4 tsp cinnamon) and adjust to preference.

  3. 9

Taste and adjust: if coffee is too strong, add a splash more hot water or additional milk. If too weak, use slightly more coffee next time (increase coffee by 1–2 grams) or reduce water.
