Toast
Method
Toast

Prepare bread
Take 2 slices of bread and, if desired, spread about 1/2 tablespoon of softened butter or a light brush of olive oil evenly on one side of each slice. This helps the bread brown and adds flavor.

Toast bread
Toaster: Place slices buttered-side up (or unbuttered) in the toaster and toast on medium until golden brown, 1.5–3 minutes depending on your toaster and preference. Skillet: Place slices buttered-side down in the preheated skillet. Cook 1.5–3 minutes until golden and crisp, then flip and toast the other side 1–2 minutes (add a small pat of butter to the skillet if you like richer flavor). Broiler/oven: Place slices buttered-side up on a baking sheet and broil 1–2 minutes watching closely until edges turn golden; flip and broil the other side 30–90 seconds as needed. Times vary — watch closely to avoid burning.

Season
Immediately after toasting, sprinkle a very light pinch of salt (use approximately 1/8–1/4 tsp of the recipe salt per slice) over buttered toast if using — this enhances flavor. If you spread oil instead of butter, you can still sprinkle salt to taste.

Add toppings
Spread approximately 2 tablespoons total of your chosen topping(s) (jam, peanut butter, mashed avocado, honey, or grated cheese) evenly over the hot toast. If using cheese and you want it melted, return toast to the skillet or under the broiler for 30–60 seconds until cheese softens or melts.

Serve
Cut the toast if desired (diagonally or in halves), plate, and serve immediately while warm.
