Method
Gluten-free toast base
- 1
Toast the bread
Place 2 slices of gluten-free bread in a toaster or under a preheated broiler/toast setting. Toast until golden and crisp at the edges, about 2–4 minutes depending on appliance and bread thickness. Watch closely so it doesn’t burn.
- 2
Spread 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or dairy-free spread evenly over both warm toast slices so it melts into the surface.
Optional savory topping
- 3
Prepare avocado
If using savory topping, scoop flesh from half a ripe avocado into a small bowl. Mash lightly with a fork until slightly chunky. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon sea salt and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper.
- 4
Divide the mashed avocado between the two buttered toast slices and spread to cover. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes over the top (or to taste). Garnish with 1 tablespoon microgreens or chopped fresh herbs if desired.
Optional sweet topping
- 5
Assemble sweet toast
If using sweet topping instead, spread 2 tablespoons softened cream cheese or dairy-free spread evenly across the warm buttered toast. Drizzle 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup over the cheese and top with 1/2 cup fresh berries or banana slices.
Serve
- 6
Serve immediately while the toast is warm and crisp. Choose either the savory or sweet topping—or split one slice savory and one slice sweet. Adjust salt, pepper, and drizzle to taste.
